Courses 2003

Week 1:  8th April to 11th April
Week 2: 14th April to 17th April

History: Harrogate Tutorial College is the main provider of private tuition in the area. Twenty years ago the demand for individual tuition at Easter was so great that we became one of the first recognised colleges to introduce small group Easter Revision courses. These are designed to help students achieve examination grades well above those they originally expected, but are not intended for students who have done little or no work in their subjects.

Teaching Staff: The tutors for these courses normally teach in the college on our one and two year GCSE and A level courses. They are in command of the subjects they teach and also have considerable experience outside education. Our students gain good results, this is due, in no small way, to the skill of their tutors.

Classes: We have a very direct approach to examination success. The small classes, average four, maximum eight students, generate an informal, student orientated approach with the emphasis on high quality work. All our tutors are very experienced in responding to the requirements of individual students and the demands of the examination syllabuses, many of them are examiners. Students enjoy being at the college and accept that they must work hard. For many it is very different from school.

Subjects: These are listed on the college application form. We offer tuition in over 30 subjects at GCSE and A level.

Tuition: The courses normally take place in the week before and the week after Easter weekend. The subjects we offer are those listed in the prospectus. Each subject has 24 hours tuition over a four-day period, 6 hours per day from 9:30-12:30 and 1:30-4:30.

If only one student enrols for a subject, then 12 hours of individual tuition are given for the same price. If there are particular syllabus requirements, for example a specific set book in English Literature, then a combination of class and individual tuition is given for the same price.

Whether the student is taught individually or in a small class, the tutors' approach is the same. They focus on the understanding and applying the main ideas of each subject, plus the essay or answer technique, presentation, revision and examination skills necessary to achieve good results. Consequently, the Easter courses include timed questions and essays, evening homework and the use in class of relevant past examination papers. The variety of existing examination boards presents no real difficulties as students have similar problems and most subjects have a definite"core course" of fundamental concepts, evidence and skills. This applies particularly to mathematical and science subjects.

Accommodation: Student living beyond easy commuting distances are placed with local host families, close to the college, who we use for full-time students during the year. Students have their own room with study facilities and the cost includes bed, breakfast and evening meal. All students requiring this service are asked to complete a detailed questionnaire to help us match the host family to their requirements.

Course fees: £300.00 for each subject studied.

Accommodation fees: £70.00 per week, which includes a £3.00 per week administration charge.
