Results

A level results are summarised in the graph below.

We had 835 subject entries -January 1997 to January 2007 Retake entry grades are shown in white along with the 452 new subject entries.

The blue shows outgoing grades. It shows that 40% were grades A or B and 60% grades A, B or C. The pass rate was 88.7%

Universities count a grade A as 120 points, a grade B as 100, and so on, a grade E being worth 40 points. On this basis, for Retake subjects, the average in-grade was 39 points, the average out-grade was 74 points. This shows that a student retaking examinations with us improves about two grades per subject. Averages can be misleading. Some students really struggle with A level work, but 90% of our students go to university. Our aim is to raise student expectations and for you to be realistic and knowledgeable about your choice of degree courses.

Inspection Summary: Harrogate Tutorial College

Harrogate Tutorial College was first accredited by the British Accreditation Council in 1988. It was most recently inspected in November 2002 by OFSTED and in February by BAC.

The BAC Inspectors reported on a good standard of provision in all areas. The quality of teaching was particularly good, and, in a number of cases, outstanding, and there was a high level of student participation in many classes. The staff showed a high level of expertise and were well supported by an efficient administration. All of the staff were fully involved in the well-being of the College's students, and the Inspectors considered that the ethos of the College, which was friendly but disciplined, was excellent.

The OFSTED inspectors referred to the generally very good relations between staff and students and between students themselves, and to the way in which the College continues to provide effectively for a wide range of individual needs.

In the classes visited, lessons were well prepared and informative. In the relatively small groups, which nevertheless contain a wide range of attainment and previous experience, staff were good at getting the level right, and in combining exposition with interaction and support for individuals. Most students were attentive, keen to respond, and not afraid to ask for help where the need arose. Most of those with previous difficulties were working in a purposeful and determined way to consolidate their learning. In the EFL classes visited students showed confidence in improving and using their English.

Students are well known as individuals and can seek help from subject tutors, the Director of Studies or Head of EFL. There is an effective programme of assessment and guidance, supported by good liaison with parents, guardians and host families in Harrogate.

Harrogate Tutorial College was awarded re-accreditation in April 2003.
