A Level
Each module (unit) has 2 - 4 class hours per week, for a maximum of 12 modules
with weekly examination practice outside class time after the first few weeks.
Each subject has 8 class hours per week, with weekly examination
practice outside class time.
Year One: 3 x AS subjects, each has 6 class hours per week.
Year Two: 3 x A2 subjects, each has 6 class hours per week
with frequent testing and examination practice as above.
We have found that the pressure and work load of
4/5 AS levels in Year One is too much and so offer a 4th AS subject
in Year Two. Most of our students choose AS General Studies a short
course from the end of January until the examination in mid May.
The course is subsidised by the college.
All students must have the necessary ICT skills,
at least NVQ level 2, or the equivalent, as this is essential for
A level coursework.
Our academic hour is 50 minutes teaching and a 10
minute break. Homework is set after each class.
We offer a wide range of subjects which allows you
to choose those you want to study. There is no need to take one
that you dislike. We are more a "Restart" than merely
a "Retake" college for students who have not achieved
acceptable grades.
The subjects we offer are listed on the Application
Form. Combinations of new A levels, Retakes and GCSEs are possible.
Most core subjects can be taken in January.
We are proud that over 90% of our A level students
go to university: we give you careful advice with the selection
of subjects as this can affect your degree choice. We offer the
traditional subjects as well as those not usually studied at school,
including Environmental Science, Business Studies and Psychology.
Many students take General Studies to strengthen their university
applications.

GCSE
Each subject has four class hours per week for a maximum of 5/6
subjects with frequent tests and careful coursework guidance.
As above but with less pressure.
These give a good academic foundation for younger
students, the majority taking five or six subjects including Maths
and English. You are encouraged to include a science and foreign
language in your choice of subjects. Our small classes help you
to achieve a high standard in your coursework.
We offer many GCSE subjects including Classics,
Italian, ICT etc, so you can choose those you prefer, but Grade
C
passes in Mathematics and English Language are essential.
We guide students carefully. Many stay on; those
who leave have the qualifications for employment or vocational courses.
We realise that some students have had problems
at school. The college is a fresh start in a completely different
environment.
In June 2002 the college was in the top 10% of
the regional GCSE league table.
Information and Communication Technology.
CLAIT: This is a 10 hour course with an additional
5 hours of subject support.
IT Level 3, Key Skills: This is a 12 hour course
with an additional 6 hours of subject support. If A level students
do not have the basic ICT skills they must take the CLAIT course
first.
All students take an ICT test on entry to the college
and are placed in the appropriate course, if this is required. There
is a maximum of six students per class and all students have access
to the computer suite. Our computers are all 2.8 GHz with MS Windows
2000, Office Pro 2003 with free broadband and wireless Internet access.
